To provide a vehicle control device capable of preventing a driver from having a sense of incongruity due to reduction in an engine speed in lockup engagement.
Since lockup control when increasing a vehicle speed is performed in step shifting by putting a lockup clutch 11 of a torque converter 4 in an engaging state from an opening state (Step S14) on condition that the gear ratio of an input shaft 13 of a CVT 2 to an output shaft 18 of the CVT 2 is in a reduction period (gear-up) (Step S13), the reduction in the engine speed caused by the lockup engagement can be synchronized with reduction in an engine speed caused by shifting, and the lockup engagement can be performed without recognizing the reduction in the engine speed caused by the lockup engagement by the driver, thus preventing the driver from having a sense of incongruity.
