Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a video coder that detects an optimum motion vector with a small arithmetic amount.
SOLUTION: A motion vector object selection section 21 selects a candidate motion vector of a coding object MB based on a permissible arithmetic amount give from a control section 5. A prediction motion vector decision section 22 decides an optimum prediction motion vector among the candidate motion vectors. A statistic mobile station section 24 obtains its variance from the motion vector obtained already. A search range decision section 25 obtains a size of a search range based on the permissible arithmetic amount. Moreover, a prediction motion vector surrounding search section 23 obtains the shape of the search range based on the variance of the motion vectors and the size of this shape is selected to be a size decided by the search range decision section 25 and the search range is searched by using an optimum prediction motion vector as a start point. Then the optimum motion vector is decided among the searched motion vector.
