Abstract:

To obtain a viscosity index improver having a viscosity index equal to that of a conventional polymethacrylate-based viscosity index improver and excellent thickening properties even with a small amount of the viscosity index improver added.

This viscosity index improver satisfies a specific number-average molecular weight, solubility parameter, crystallization starting temperature and factor of steric hindrance and comprises an oil-soluble polyalkylene (thio) ether derivative of a compound containing 6-10 active hydrogens.
