A washing machine performs a preliminary stirring operation for stirring clothing and washing water for washing the clothing at a second water level lower than a first water level before the clothing is washed at the first water level. The washing machine includes a washing tub storing the clothing; a water supply system supplying the washing water for the preliminary stirring operation until a water level reaches the second water level; a pulsator stirring the clothing and the washing water within the washing tub; a drive unit driving the pulsator; a sensor element sensing vibration of the washing tub; and a control device controlling the drive unit on the basis of the vibration of the washing tub sensed by the sensor element. If the vibration of the washing tub exceeds a threshold value determined for the vibration during the preliminary stirring operation, the drive unit reduces a rotation speed of the pulsator under control of the control device.
