A waste direct melting furnace composed of a shaft furnace is adapted such that waste W inserted into a melt discharge section 4 at an upper portion of a furnace body 2 including a furnace chamber 20 therein is melted chiefly with self combustion on a plurality of water cooling grates 5 provided in parallel so as to traverse the furnace chamber 20, the melt M passing among the water cooling grates 5 is derived to the outside of the furnace body 2 through a lower waste insertion portion 3 in the furnace chamber 20, and simultaneously produced thermal decomposition gas G1 is exhausted to the outside of the furnace body 2 through a derivation tube 9. In the furnace, the water cooling grates 5 includes a cold heat medium flow passage for flowing cooling water to the center, and an outermost one of at least one side among a plurality of the water cooling grates 5 is buried in the furnace body 2.
