This waste heat recovery type vessel propulsion device includes: a power turbine control section which, based on a power requested in the vessel and a load on a main engine 22, calculates, as a feed-forward opening, the opening of a power turbine control valve B for controlling the flow of the exhaust gas from the main engine 22 supplied to a power turbine 23 and which outputs the feed-forward opening to the power turbine control valve B; and a fuel injection amount control section which calculates, as a reduced fuel injection amount, the fuel injection amount of the main engine 22 equivalent to the output of a shaft generator motor 35 during the operation of the motor and which deducts the reduced fuel injection amount from the fuel injection amount supplied to the main engine 22.
