Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water retentive which, when added to a water-based coating agent, can give a coating composition satisfactory in both water retentiv ity and low viscosity by selecting a water retentive comprising a homopolymer and/or a copolymer each comprising an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, or the like.
SOLUTION: The water retentive comprises a compound represented by the formula [wherein o, p, q, and r are each 0 or 1 or greater; M1 and M2 are each an alkali (alkaline earth) metal, ammonium, or a 1-8C alcohol residue; R1 to R8 are each H or methyl; and R0 and R9 are each a molecular terminal of the compound] and having a weight-average molecular weight of 8,000-100,000. Desirably o, p, q, and r satisfy the relationships: 0.1<(p+q)/(o+p+q+r)≤0.8, 0 ≤/(o+p+q+r)≤0.8, and 0≤(q+r)/(o+p+q+r)≤0.3. The compound is desirably a homopolymer (salt) of acrylic acid, a copolymer (salt) comprising acrylic acid and maleic acid, or a copolymer (salt) comprising methacrylic acid, an acrylic acid/lower alcohol alkyl ester and/or a methacrylic acid/lower alcohol alkyl ester.
