The water-soluble azo compound is represented by formula (1) [wherein R is a 1-4C alkoxy group or the like; n is 1 or 2; m is 1-3; x is an integer of 2-4 or the like; group A is a hydroxy-substituted mono 1-4C aliphatic amino group, a carboxy-substituted 1-20C aliphatic amino group, an unsubstituted five- or six-membered nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group, a substituted aromatic amino group or the like; the aromatic ring containing a ring represented by a broken line is a benzene ring when a ring represented by a broken line does not exist and is a naphthalene ring when a ring represented by a broken line exists] or its salt. The ink composition suitable for ink-jet recording contains the compound as a dye.
