Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveguide with large difference in refractive indices of the two compounds which has low loss characteristics and which is free from factors to increase the long-term loss, by forming such a structure that the core having an almost square cross section is embedded in a high concn. fluorine-doped quartz glass layer and by constituting the core of low concn. fluorine-doped quartz glass.
SOLUTION: This waveguide has such a structure that the low concn. fluorine-doped SiO2 core 22 having an almost square cross section is embedded in the high concn. fluorine-doped SiO2 clad layer 21 formed on a squartz glass (SiO2) substrate 20. In this case, a SiO2 substrate 20 is used as the substrate, and a high concn. fluorine-doped SiO2 lower clad layer is formed on the substrate 20. Then a low concn. fluorine-doped SiO2 layer is formed on the lower clad layer above described. The low concn. fluorine-doped SiO2 is processed to form the core 22 having an almost square cross section. Then a high concn. fluorine-doped SiO2 upper clad layer is formed is contact with the side face and the upper face of the low concn. fluorine-doped SiO2 core 22.
