PURPOSE: To improve low temp. toughness of the weld metal in submerged arc welding of a low temp. steel by combining a steel wire contg. C, Si, Mn, Ni and N in specified amt. with a flux of which the carbonate and basicity are specified.
CONSTITUTION: A wire for welding is composed, by weight, of 0.005W0.30% C, 0.04W0.20% Si, 0.10W0.30% Mn, 6.0W8.0% Ni, 0.0060% N, and the balance Fe with unavoidable impurities. Submerged arc welding of a low temp. steel is accomplished by combining such wire with a high basicity flux or welding contg. 0.3W3% carbonate in terms of CO2 in the case of a fused flux and 0.3W10% in the case of a baked flux and having ≥1.50 basicity expressed by the calculation equation. Quantity of heat input is relatively increased by such method and the weld metal having the low temp. high toughness at which both impact and COD values provide satisfactory requirements even when efficient welding is performed is obtd.
