Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling particle sizes of seed particles which are important for quality stabilization when producing a latex using the seed particles.SOLUTION: A method of producing resin seed particles comprises: (a) combining (i) water, (ii) a branched alkyl diphenyl oxide disulfonate, (iii) a monomer, (iv) an optional branching agent and (v) an optional chain transfer agent, in a vessel to form a monomer mixture, (b) charging an aliquot of the monomer mixture into a reactor comprising a solution comprising a branched alkyl diphenyl oxide disulfonate; and (c) adding initiator to the reactor in a time no longer than 7.5 minutes to obtain resin seed particles each comprising a particle size independent of amount of initiator or initiator adding rate, wherein the particle size varies by about ±0.5 to about ±5.0 nm.SELECTED DRAWING: None
