Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide systems and methods for mechanically reducing an amount of the skull material in a finished, molded part formed from amorphous alloy using an injection molding system.SOLUTION: Skull material 46 of a molten amorphous alloy 42 is captured in a trap 40 before molding the material. A cavity 40 is provided in the injection molding system to trap skull material. For example, the cavity 40 is provided in a mold, the tip of a plunger rod, or a transfer sleeve. Thus, mixing of molten amorphous alloy is induced so that skull material is reduced before molding. A plunger and/or its tip can be used to induce mixing (e.g., systematic movement of plunger rod, or a shape of its tip). By minimizing the amount of skull material in the finished, molded part, the quality of the part is increased. The plunger is preferably includes a tip provided with a cavity therein and is configured to trap skull material during injection.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
