Abstract:
Provided is an absorbent which is formed of iron oxyhydroxide and which has higher absorption speed and absorption efficiency than hitherto. Absorbent particles according to the present invention: each includes iron oxyhydroxide as the main ingredient; have not less than 90% of the volume thereof occupied by granular crystals each having a crystal-grain size of not greater than 20 nm, or by columnar crystals each having a width of not greater than 10 nm and having a length of not greater than 30 nm; and has a BET specific surface area of not less than 250 m2/g. The absorbent particles are produced through a process including a step for adding, while pH is adjusted to 3-6, a base represented by YOH (wherein Y represents a monovalent atom or atomic group) to a solution of at least one selected from trivalent iron compounds each represented by FeX3 (wherein X represents a monovalent atom or atomic group other than OH) so as to generate iron oxyhydroxide, wherein the concentration of the total of FeX3, YOH, and the other electrolytes at the end of the step is 10 mass% or higher.
