Abstract:
A method is provided of producing acetic acid with excellent potassium permanganate test values in an industrially efficient manner and without incurring high costs. An aldehyde separation and removal step involves a step in which acetaldehyde, a byproduct, is separated and removed in an industrially advantageous manner, and the aqueous phase and/or the organic phase of a low-boiling-point substance-removal column condensed overhead liquid is distilled with a crotonaldehyde removal column, wherein the reflux ratio of the low-boiling-point substance-removal column is set greater than or equal to 2 (the case of refluxing the aqueous phase) and the crotonaldehyde removal column is manipulated so as to satisfy at least one condition of (a-i) to (a-iii) below.
(a-i) The reflux ratio in the distillation column is set to greater than or equal to 0.01.
(a-ii) The ratio in said distillation column of the crotonaldehyde concentration (ppm by mass) in the distillate to the crotonaldehyde concentration (ppm by mass) in the feed liquid (the former/the latter) is set to less than 1.
(a-iii) The ratio of said distillation column of the crotonaldehyde concentration (ppm by mass) in the bottoms liquid to the crotonaldehyde concentration (ppm by mass) in the feed liquid (the former/the latter) is set to greater than 1.
