The present invention relates to an air foil journal bearing having an improved housing structure, the air foil journal bearing comprising: a bearing housing having an empty space in which a rotor is disposed, and formed such that opposite lateral sides thereof are open; a bump foil provided inside the bearing housing and formed along the circumferential direction, wherein one side of the bump foil is fixedly coupled to the bearing housing; and a top foil provided inside the bump foil and formed along the circumferential direction, wherein one side of the top foil is fixedly coupled to the bearing housing, wherein the bearing housing has an inner circumferential surface formed in an oval shape wider in the vertical direction, or has an inner circumferential surface having an upper side formed in a circular shape and a lower side formed in an oval shape wider in the vertical direction, which enables the rotor to rotate with the center of rotation thereof agreeing with the center of the bearing housing while the rotor is rotating.
