Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for receiving a setting of a password as an image from a user and providing the user with a converted image with which the image of the password is associated, thereby allowing the user to remember the password for a long time. The apparatus according to one aspect comprises: a provision unit for providing an image in which the password of the user is selected for a screen output; a reception unit for receiving a password setting request of the user including a partial image selected as the password of the user in the image outputted onto a screen; a generation unit for generating unique related information corresponding to the received partial image as password data of the user; a setting unit for setting the password of the user by storing the generated related information as the password data of the user; and an authentication unit for receiving a password authentication request of the user including the partial image, generating the received partial image as related information through the generation unit, and comparing the generated related information with preset password data and if matched, authenticating that the authentication is successful.
