Abstract:
An aromatic oligomer represented by the following formula (1): (A-F)¿n?-A (wherein A is a segment comprising (a) 30 to 90 wt.% bi- or tricyclic aromatic compound and (b) 10 to 70 wt.% phenol compound; F is methylene or a combination of methylene with CH¿2?OCH¿2?-; and n is a number of 1 to 100). This aromatic oligomer is obtained by reacting a polycyclic aromatic compound such as naphthalene or benzothiophene with a phenol and with formaldehyde or a derivative thereof in the presence of an acid catalyst. This aromatic oligomer is odorless and usable in various applications. In particular, when incorporated in a rubber, resin, etc., the oligomer is highly effective as a tackifier in a wide temperature range or is highly effective in imparting vibration-damping properties.
