An automatic transmission (11) equipped with planetary gear mechanisms (PM1-PM4) which are provided with sun gears (S1-S4), carriers (CR1-CR4), and ring gears (R1-R4). In addition, the following are connected: the first sun gear (S1) and the third sun gear (S3); the second carrier (CR2), the third carrier (CR3), and the fourth ring gear (R4); and the second sun gear (S2) and the fourth carrier (CR4). The automatic transmission (11) is further equipped with clutches (C1-C4) capable of engaging: the first ring gear (R1) with the second ring gear (R2); the first ring gear (R1) with the third ring gear (R3); the second carrier (CR2) with the third ring gear (R3); and the first sun gear (S1) and the third sun gear (S3) with the fourth sun gear (S4). The automatic transmission (11) is also equipped with a first brake (B1) capable of locking the second ring gear (R2) to an automatic transmission case (17), and a second brake (B2) capable of locking the fourth sun gear (S4) to the automatic transmission case (17).
