An automatic transmission (11) equipped with planetary gear mechanisms (PM1-PM4) which are provided with sun gears (S1-S4), carriers (CR1-CR4), and ring gears (R1-R4). In addition, connecting elements (31-34) connect the following: the first sun gear (S1) and the second sun gear (S2); the first ring gear (R1) and the fourth carrier (CR4); the second carrier (CR2) and the third ring gear (R3); and the third sun gear (S3) and the fourth sun gear (S4). The automatic transmission (11) is further equipped with clutches (C1-C4) capable of engaging: the fourth sun gear (S4) with the fourth carrier (CR4); the first carrier (CR1) with the third carrier (CR3); the second ring gear (R2) with the third carrier (CR3); and the fourth connecting element (34) with the second ring gear (R2). The automatic transmission (11) is also equipped with a first brake (B1) capable of locking the first connecting element (31) to an automatic transmission case (17), and a second brake (B2) capable of locking the fourth ring gear (R4) to the automatic transmission case (17).
