A button mode configuration method, pertaining to the technical field of terminal control. The method is executable by a terminal. Pressure sensing regions are provided on one or more side surfaces of the terminal opposite to a screen display region. The method comprises: detecting, by means of touch sensors distributed on a surface of the terminal, a holding gesture of a user holding the terminal (201); determining a button configuration mode corresponding to the holding gesture, the button configuration mode indicating a button function corresponding to a target side surface of the one or more side surfaces (202); and providing, in a pressure sensing region on the target side surface, a pressure sensing button corresponding to the button function (203). The invention enables the terminal to provide, according to different holding gestures of a user, buttons having different functions on a side surface opposite to the screen display region, thereby achieving automatic switching of function buttons on the side surface of the terminal, expanding button configuration modes of the side surface of the terminal, and improving operability of buttons on the side surface of the terminal.
