The present invention provides a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas, the catalyst having exceptional performance in purifying chemically stable methane. The catalyst 5 for purifying exhaust gas according to the present invention comprises a substrate 10 that divides cells 12 through which an exhaust gas passes, and a catalyst layer 20 provided to the surface of the substrate 10. The catalyst layer 20 includes: a palladium layer 21 that includes palladium and that is extended from a first end part 10a, which is an end part of the cells 12 at which the exhaust gas is introduced, toward a second end part 10b, which is an end part at which the exhaust gas is discharged; a platinum layer 22 that includes platinum and that is extended from the second end part 10b toward the first end part 10a; and a rhodium layer 23 that includes rhodium and that is layered on both the palladium layer 21 and the platinum layer 22. The Pd layer 21 includes an alkali earth metal at a content amount of 0.04-0.16 mol inclusive per 100g of the Pd layer. In the Pt layer, the alkali earth metal content per 100 g of the Pt layer is limited to no more than 0.03 mol.
