According to the present invention, a rotary compressor is provided with an electrically driven mechanism unit, a compression mechanism unit, and an oil storage unit, inside a hermetically sealed container, for example. The compression mechanism unit includes a rotating shaft and a journal bearing member having a bearing (35), which are in sliding rotation with lubricating oil interposed therebetween. In the compression mechanism unit, a right-handed helical groove (61) and a left-handed helical groove (62) are additionally formed in at least one of an outer circumference of the rotating shaft or an inner circumference of the bearing (35). It is thus possible to promote the formation of an oil film in a gap between the rotating shaft and the bearing (35), and to promote discharge of abrasion powder from the gap between the rotating shaft and the bearing, even if there is an increase in surface pressure or when a low viscosity lubricating oil is being used. Seizure or wear accompanying direct contact sliding is thus suppressed, and the performance and reliability of the compressor can therefore be improved.
