Abstract:

A cubic boron nitride sintered body comprising cubic boron nitride, a binder and a catalytic metal element, wherein the content of cubic boron nitride is 50 to 85 vol% inclusive and the content of the catalyst is 0.5 to 5 mass% inclusive. When a region of a structure of the cubic boron nitride sintered body, which has a size of 8 μm × 8 μm, is observed under a scanning transmission electron microscope, an image obtained by the observation is subjected to compositional analysis on any one line segment among line segments that divide the image into partial regions formed by 4 rows and 4 columns, the total value of a nitrogen detection peak value and a boron detection peak value at an arbitrary measurement point on the line segments is calculated, and then measurement points at each of which the total value becomes equal to or smaller than half of the maximum value among the total values determined at all of measurement points are defined as bond part measurement points, the percentage of the number of bond part measurement points at which the catalytic element is not detected relative to the total number of the bond part measurement points is 30% or less.
