This cutting insert has a cutting edge member and a mounting section. The mounting section includes a mounting face on which the cutting edge member is mounted, a first side face, and a second side face. The mounting section has therein the introduction opening and discharge opening of a coolant supply passage. The first side face is provided with a step comprising a riser section and a flat section. If, in a cross-section perpendicular to a rake face and intersecting the introduction opening and the discharge opening, the distance between a cutting edge and the mounting face in the direction perpendicular to the rake face is defined as a first distance, the distance between the mounting face and the boundary between the riser section and the flat section in the direction perpendicular to the rake face is defined as a second distance, the distance between the tip of the cutting edge and a boundary in a direction parallel to the rake face is defined as a third distance, and the distance between the tip of the cutting edge and a second discharge opening in the direction parallel to the rake face is defined as a fourth distance, then the second distance is greater than the first distance, and the value obtained by dividing the third distance by the fourth distance is in the range of 0.5 to 0.8, inclusive.
