Abstract:
A cutting tool that includes a rake face, a flank face, and a cutting edge. The cutting tool comprises a base material and an AlTiN layer. The AlTiN layer includes cubic AlxTi1-xN crystal grains, the Al atom ratio x being at least 0.7 but less than 0.95. The AlTiN layer includes a center part, and, when a color map is created on the basis of the crystal orientations of each of the crystal grains of the AlxTi1-xN layer as identified by an electron backscattering diffraction image analysis of a cross-section taken of the AlTiN layer along a plane that includes a normal line to the rake face and a normal line to the flank face, on said color map, the percentage of the area of the center part that is occupied by crystal grains that have a (200) plane orientation is at least 80% at the rake face and at least 50% but less than 80% at the cutting edge.
