Title:
DISK ARRAY SYSTEM AND METHOD OF EXPANDING STORAGE CAPACITY
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2001/040925
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A disk array device is expanded to a capacity larger than its hard disk drive (HDD) in use in a high-reliability disk system with redundancy comprising a computer system and a plurality of magnetic disk drives. The disk array device comprises a disk interface controller (3) connected with a plurality of HDDs (7), of which some HDDs (1-3) compose RAID. Three new HDDs of larger capacity than the existing HDDs are prepared. First of all, the existing HDD (1) is replaced with the new HDD (1), the data stored in the existing HDD (2) and HDD (3) are reconfigured and stored in the new HDD (1). In this manner, the existing HDD (2) and HDD (3) are successively replaced with the new HDD (2) and HDD (3), and the data to be stored in the two other HDDs are reconfigured. After all the three HDDs are replaced, configuration information between the new HDDs is changed and the new HDDs have expanded storage capacity.
