The purpose of the present invention is to obtain a display device and a display method whereby it is possible to reduce the time required to render a display by reducing the number of pieces of data to be displayed, even if the type of data to be handled is three-dimensional data. This display device is provided with: a tool movement path calculation means (14) which, on the basis of data of a machining program in which commands to move a tool in three dimensions are written, calculates tool movement paths, which are three-dimensional paths along which a tool is to be moved; a path replacement processing unit (19) which replaces a series of a plurality of tool movement paths with a single replacement path on the basis of the tool movement paths calculated by the tool movement path calculation means (14) and a predetermined measure; and a display unit (20) which displays the replacement path after the path replacement processing unit (19) replaces the series of the plurality of tool movement paths with the replacement path.
