The objective of the present invention is to provide an electric vacuum cleaner (1) capable of preventing dirt and dust remaining in a swirl chamber (23) from back-flowing to an inlet (18a) when stowed. To this end, the electric vacuum cleaner (1) is provided with: an electrically-powered fan (17) which generates suction air; a main unit (2) which is formed so as to be able to take different configurations when used and when stowed, and which incorporates the electrically-powered fan (17); and a dust collector (5) which is disposed on the main unit (2). The dust collector (5) is provided with: the inlet (18a) which is formed so as to allow the suction air generated by the electrically-powered fan (17) to flow in; the swirl chamber (23) which is connected to the inlet (18a) so that the suction air that has flown in from the inlet (18a) swirls; a dust chamber (29) which is formed so as to collect dirt and dust that has separated from the suction air that has swirled at the swirl chamber (23); and a retention unit (23c) which is disposed within the swirl chamber (23), and which is formed so as to be disposed lower than the inlet (18a) when the main unit (2) is in the configuration of being stowed.
