This control method for an electrically powered bicycle (1) includes: a first detection step (S200) for detecting a pedal depression force or a crank rotation speed, and a vehicle body speed; a first determination step (S201) in which the pedal depression force or the crank rotation speed and the vehicle body speed are used to determine whether the electrically powered bicycle is in at least one state among stopping, walking, coasting, and normal travel; a second determination step (S202) for determining whether the electrically powered bicycle is in either the walking state or the coasting state; and an electrical powering step (S203) in which electrical powering is executed to assist with walking if it is determined that the electrically powered bicycle (1) is in the walking state.
