An electronic device is provided. The electronic device comprises a sensor module, a communication module, a display, a memory, and at least one processor, wherein the at least one processor may be configured to: identify a plurality of states on the basis of at least one of information acquired through the sensor module, information received from an external electronic device through the communication module, or information related to a function of the electronic device; identify a plurality of character objects corresponding to each of the plurality of states and a priority of the plurality of states; identify a first state from among the plurality of states on the basis of the identified priority; identify whether a second state that can be merged with the first state is present or absent; and cause the display depending on the presence or absence of the second state that can be merged with the first state to display a first character object corresponding to the first state or display a third character object corresponding to the merging of the first state and the second state.
