An embedded-magnet-type rotary electric motor comprising a stator and a rotor that has a rotor core having a plurality of permanent magnets embedded in the interior thereof, the rotor being retained so as to be capable of rotating a rotation axis on the inside of the stator, wherein: the plurality of permanent magnets are retained so as to be spaced from each other in the circumferential direction in the outer peripheral portion of the rotor core, and have magnetic poles at both ends thereof in the circumferential direction; the rotor core has a plurality of lightening holes that are spaced from each other in the circumferential direction on the rotation axis side of the plurality of permanent magnets; each of the plurality of lightening holes has a bottom wall surface portion that extends in the circumferential direction on the rotation axis side, an outer peripheral wall surface portion on the outer peripheral side, and side wall surface portions that connects the bottom wall surface portion and the outer peripheral wall surface portion; and the outer peripheral wall surface portion has an inclined wall surface portion that approaches the rotation axis over the interval from the central portion toward a magnetic pole side of one permanent magnet among the plurality of permanent magnets.
