Abstract:
This invention provides an exhaust gas purifier for an internal combustion engine comprising exhaust gas purification means such as an NOx catalyst (20) provided in an exhaust passage (15) in an internal combustion engine, and an SOx trapping catalyst (30) provided upstream of the exhaust gas purification means, and ozone supply means (40, 41) which can supply ozone to a position upstream of the SOx trapping catalyst (30). According to the above constitution, SOx in the exhaust gas can be absorbed in the SOx trapping catalyst (30) before arrival at the NOx catalyst (20). In particular, SOx in the exhaust gas can be oxidized with ozone as an oxidizing gas to a decomposable state, and SOx can be absorbed even at a low temperature. Preferably, the SOx trapping catalyst (30) does not have an active site of a noble metal. In this case, sulfur poisoning of the SOx trapping catalyst can be prevented, and a lowering of the SOx absorption capacity can be suppressed.
