Provided is an exhaust gas treatment method allowing the mercury contained in an exhaust gas to be separated and eliminated efficiently and inexpensively.　The method involves cooling an exhaust gas which contains mercury in a metal vapor state by spraying water, or the like, preferably at a mean cooling speed of 4.5 to 18.0°C/second, causing the mercury in the exhaust gas to condense from the metal vapor state into a metal liquid state, thereby separating and eliminating the mercury from the exhaust gas. If the exhaust gas is cooled by spraying water, the sprayed water is recovered and separated into separated water and solid content containing the mercury condensed into the metal liquid state to recover the mercury from the solid content. The metal mercury particles condensed into the metal liquid state adhere to exhaust gas dust trapped in the cooling water at the same time and are thereby brought into a dispersed state in the cooling water; thus, separation and recovery can be performed readily by means of an appropriate separation device.
