Abstract:
The present invention relates to a fault protection and bypass device of a modular multilevel converter power module, comprising an IGBT and a diode connected in parallel therewith, and a capacitor connected in parallel with several IGBTs that are connected in series, the capacitor having a thyristor connected in parallel; an anode of the thyristor is connected to a positive electrode of the capacitor, and a cathode of the thyristor is connected to a negative electrode of the capacitor. When the power module of the present invention fails or becomes loses efficiency, the thyristor is triggered, the capacitor is discharged by means of the thyristor, and the electrical current density near a gate region is high, generating tremendous heat pressure; silicon and molybdenum wafers in the device will melt and become an alloy, forming a short circuit state. Due to the inherent characteristics of the thyristor device, there is no external mechanical damage or ruptures, which may ensure long-term stable and reliable flow. The thyristor and the diode together form a bypass path.
