Abstract:
A fluorescent element comprising: a substrate having a first main surface and a second main surface, which faces the first main surface; and a Group-III-element nitride semiconductor layer disposed over the first main surface of the substrate and emitting fluorescence upon reception of electrons, wherein the fluorescence is outputted through the first main surface and second main surface of the substrate and the fluorescence comprises a main fluorescent component and a deep-level fluorescent component that has a longer wavelength and a longer life than the main fluorescent component. At least one surface selected from among the second main surface and one or more interfaces including the first main surface which are present between the second main surface and the Group-III-element nitride semiconductor layer has a fractal structure. The fractal structure comprises a plurality of first protrusions and a plurality of second protrusions formed on the surface of each first protrusion, and the modal pitch of the second protrusions of the fractal structure is less than the modal pitch of the first protrusions and is up to 3.2 times an optical wavelength to which the peak wavelength of the main fluorescent component has been converted.
