A free-piston generator (10) for generating electricity with the linear reciprocal motion of a piston (20) is provided with a combustion chamber (26) and a spring portion (28) disposed on mutually opposite sides of the piston (20) and comprises: an engine unit (16) in which the piston (20) reciprocally moves by the combustion pressure generated upon combustion of a fuel in the combustion chamber (26) and the restoring force of the spring portion compressed by the piston (20); an electricity generation unit (14) for generating electricity with the reciprocal motion of the piston (20); and a control means (50) for controlling the drives of the engine unit (16) and the electricity generation unit (14). The control means adjusts the balance between a fuel injection amount injected into the combustion chamber and a generation load, the repulsion force of the spring portion (28), an intake air amount into the combustion chamber (26), and so on, thereby adjusting the motion frequency of the piston (20) or the compression ratio during combustion.
