A fuel cell comprising a film electrode assembly (2) comprising a plurality of single cells (C) which comprise: an electrolyte membrane (17); anodes (13) comprising a plurality of anode catalyst layers (11) disposed apart from each other on one side of the electrolyte membrane (17) and anode gas diffusion layers (12) superposed on the anode catalyst layers (11); and cathodes (16) comprising a plurality of cathode catalyst layers (14) disposed apart from each other on the other side of the electrolyte membrane (17) so as to respectively face the anode catalyst layers (11) and cathode gas diffusion layers (15) superposed on the cathode catalyst layers (14).  The fuel cell is characterized in that either the anode catalyst layer (11) or the cathode catalyst layer (14) or both in either of adjoining two single cells (C) become thinner toward the other single cell (C).
