Abstract:
A fusion splicing apparatus of the present invention for fusion-splicing end faces (5a, 7a) of a pair of optical fibers (1, 3) comprises discharging electrodes (13, 15), fiber holders (17, 19) holding the pair of optical fibers, V groove supports (21, 23) positioning and fixing the end faces of the pair of optical fibers instead of the fiber holders, V groove support moving units (33, 35) moving the V groove supports so that a shaft center of the pair of optical fibers takes a position spaced away from a straight line connecting the discharging electrodes with each other, and holder moving units (37, 39) moving the fiber holders so that the pair of optical fibers form a near straight line between the V groove support and the fiber holder. Over-melting is inhibited even when a low-melting optical fiber is used for the pair of optical fibers in order for a center of the discharging electrode to be spaced away from a shaft line of the pair of optical fibers. The pair of optical fibers are fixed tightly at the V groove support so that the pair of optical fibers form the near straight line between the V groove support and the fiber holder.
