This gas separation membrane element comprises a gas separation membrane and a sealing part for preventing mixing of a starting material gas and a specific gas that has passed through the gas separation membrane. The gas separation membrane comprises a first porous layer that contains a porous film and a hydrophilic resin composition layer that is provided on the first porous layer. The sealing part is a region wherein a cured product of a sealing material has penetrated into at least the first porous layer of the gas separation membrane; and the thermal expansion coefficient A of the sealing part and the thermal expansion coefficient B of the material that constitutes the first porous layer satisfy the relationship of formula (I). 0.35 ≤ A/B ≤ 1.0 (I)
