Abstract:

A hub bearing comprising a carbon steel for mechanical structural use which has improved resistance to surface-initiated peeling and has a long life even under severe lubricating conditions. Also provided is a grease for hub bearings which comprises a base oil and a thickener, wherein the base oil is one in which the proportion of naphthenic carbon atoms to all carbon atoms as determined by the n-d-M ring analysis method is 32-37%. The base oil may be a mineral oil or an oil mixture of a mineral oil and a synthetic hydrocarbon oil. The thickener may be a urea compound represented by the following formula (1) and be contained in an amount of 1-40 mass% based on the whole grease. The hub bearing contains, enclosed therein, the grease for hub bearings. (1) (In the formula, R² represents a C_6-15 aromatic hydrocarbon group; and R¹ and R³ each represents at least one hydrocarbon group selected among alicyclic hydrocarbon groups and aromatic hydrocarbon groups.)
