Abstract:

Provided are: a heat insulating material which has excellent heat insulation performance and excellent strength at the same time; and a method for producing the heat insulating material. This heat insulating material contains fine metal oxide particles having an average particle diameter of 50 nm or less and reinforcing fibers, and has a crosslinked structure which is formed by some fine metal oxide particles dissolved among the fine metal oxide particles. This method for producing a heat insulating material comprises: a curing step wherein a dry press molded body that contains fine metal oxide particles having an average particle diameter of 50 nm or less and reinforcing fibers is cured in a water vapor saturated atmosphere under pressure at a temperature of 100˚C or higher; and a drying step wherein the cured dry press molded body is dried.
