Abstract:
In a hybrid vehicle (10), a torque equal to the user-requested torque, determined in accordance with the accelerator operating amount (AP), is caused to act on a drive shaft (53) by controlling the torque generated by this engine and the output torque of a second generator/motor (MG2), while adjusting the output generated by this engine so that the efficiency of the engine (20) is optimum (in other words, while operating the engine (20) at the optimum engine operating point). Furthermore, the vehicle (10) charges the battery (63) by controlling the power generated by the first generator/motor (MG1), by altering the output of the engine in accordance with the residual amount (SOC) of the battery (63). In addition, the vehicle (10) controls the air/fuel ratio of the engine to a rich air/fuel ratio if a prescribed condition is not satisfied, and controls the air/fuel ratio of the engine to the theoretical air/fuel ratio if the prescribed condition is satisfied. If the engine air/fuel ratio is controlled to a rich air/fuel ratio, the vehicle (10) sets the upper limiting value of the output generated by the engine (20) (i.e. the upper limiting value of the engine output) to a small value compared with the case where the air/fuel ratio of the engine is controlled to the theoretical air/fuel ratio.
