Provided are an image display device which enables display of three-dimensional images with the use of special glasses (a vision assistive device), and a three-dimensional image display system, wherein the image display device makes it possible even for a person viewing a screen without using the vision assistive device to view images with little discomfort. In the image display device, a display unit is provided which displays thereon left-eye images (L) and right-eye images (R) in such a manner that the respective left-eye images and right-eye images are temporally or spatially separated from each other, the left-eye images being supposed to be viewed through a left-eye part of the vision assistive device, the right-eye images being supposed to be viewed through a right-eye part of the vision assistive device. Further, an average luminance level controlling unit is provided which operates so that the average of the luminance levels of the left-eye images that are displayed on the display unit in one frame, and the average of the luminance levels of the right-eye images that are displayed thereon in that same frame can be relatively different from each other.
