Abstract:
Disclosed is an image encoding method which allocates two or more reference picture indices to one or more reference pictures that are different from the picture to be encoded, which includes a block to be encoded, and encodes the block to be encoded. When encoding the block to be encoded, if two or more reference picture indices are used, the disclosed image encoding method involves an identical reference picture determination step (S403) for determining whether the reference pictures indicated by the two or more reference picture indices are the same pictures, and a prediction direction switching step (S404, S405) for switching, on the basis of the determination result in the identical reference picture determination step, whether or not to fix the prediction direction when encoding in a prescribed encoding mode the block to be encoded.
