An image processing apparatus capable of detecting, with high accuracy, the headlights of cars running in the opposite direction, the taillights of cars running ahead and pedestrians at the same time during the night. The image processing apparatus comprises: a means for acquiring a first exposure data at a first shutter speed; a means for acquiring a second exposure data at a second shutter speed lower than the first shutter speed; a means for acquiring a third exposure data at a third shutter speed lower than the first shutter speed; a means for converting the first exposure data to a visible gray-scale image; a means for outputting the visible gray-scale image; a means for converting the second exposure data to a color image; a means for outputting the color image; a means for converting the third exposure data to an infrared gray-scale image; a means for outputting the infrared gray-scale image; a means for detecting a headlight on the basis of the visible gray-scale image; a means for detecting a taillight on the basis of the color image; and a means for detecting a pedestrian on the basis of an image obtained by computing the infrared gray-scale and color images.
