Title:
INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2011/145143
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine is provided with an exhaust treatment device disposed on an exhaust passage, and a burner for raising the exhaust gas temperature, said burner being disposed upstream of the exhaust treatment device. The burner contains: a fuel addition valve where fuel is added inside the exhaust passage; a first igniter that ignites the added fuel; a catalytic burner disposed downstream of the first igniter; and a second igniter disposed downstream of the catalytic burner. The catalytic burner divides the exhaust passage into an internal catalyst passage formed inside the catalytic burner, and an external catalyst passage formed outside the catalytic burner. The second igniter is positioned between the external catalyst passage and the exhaust treatment device. The soot that is generated can be burned by the second igniter.
