Abstract:
Disclosed is an iodide single crystal which has the same crystalline structure as that of LuI3, which is activated at its luminescent center RE [wherein RE represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb], and wherein one or some or all of lutetium (Lu) atoms in the iodide single crystal are substituted by Y and/or Gd. Also disclosed is a method for producing an iodide single crystal, which comprises the steps of: preparing a starting material comprising an RE metal or REI3, I2 and a metal of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Lu, Y and Gd and/or an iodide of the element (provided that when only Lu is selected as the element, only metal Lu is employed); maintaining the starting material under reduced pressure; heating the starting material at a reaction temperature to produce a raw material polycrystal comprising at least XI3:RE [wherein X represents the above-mentioned at least one element]; and converting the raw material polycrystal into a single crystal.
