Abstract:
To provide a light-driven fuel cell having excellent power generation characteristics. A light-driven fuel cell comprises a cathode, an anode, and a proton permeation membrane between the cathode and the anode. The anode is provided with a photocatalyst for an anaerobic methane oxidation reaction. Methane and water are fed to the anode; the anode is irradiated with light; and methanol, protons, and electrons are produced by an anaerobic methane oxidation reaction from the water and the methane fed to the anode. The protons pass through the proton permeation membrane and migrate to the cathode. The electrons migrate to the cathode through an external circuit. The cathode is provided with a photocatalyst for an aerobic methane oxidation reaction. Methane and oxygen are fed to the cathode; the cathode is irradiated with light; and methanol and water are produced by an aerobic methane oxidation reaction from the electrons and the protons that have migrated from the anode, and the methane and the oxygen fed to the cathode.
