Abstract:
It is found out that licorice root or licorice root extract, which has been orally taken or eaten as drugs, Chinese herb drugs, food additives such as sweeteners and health foods for a sufficiently long time, and glabridin, glabrol, glabrene and 4’-O-methylglabridin contained therein have effects of inhibiting human and swine pancreas-origin lipase and cholesterol esterase and so on. It is further proved that, by feeding experimental animals with a feed containing these substances in a large amount, obesity can be inhibited and neutral fat and cholesterol can be excreted in a large amount into the feces to thereby inhibit the absorption thereof in vivo. Thus, it becomes possible to provide a neutral fat and cholesterol absorption inhibitory composition and an obesity inhibitory composition based on the inhibition of lipase and/or the inhibition of cholesterol esterase which are completely different from dietary fiber-containing compositions having been widely employed hitherto.
