A liquid crystal alignment agent that exhibits a good coatability on substrates, and with which good pretilt angle characteristics can be obtained using a photoalignment method, is provided by the incorporation in the liquid crystal alignment agent of a polymer (A) that has a photoalignment group and a structural unit (M1) derived from a spiro ring-containing monomer.
